When in a foreign country, wanting to have a taste of the local food, you’ll likely choose an establishment with menus translated in English hoping that you’ll be able to understand what the different dishes contain, to pick something you’ll like. However, from the theory to the practice it’s sometimes far distant reality depending on where you are on our globe.
Below are some translations you’ll no doubt find amusing, while others will truly baffle you or even make you think twice before ordering a specific meal or eating there. There are many such mistakes included in articles on various websites, so we decided for this #FunnyFriday to pick ten restaurant translations that will amuse you.
- Our wines leave you nothing to hope for. (On the menu of a Swiss restaurant) OK, we won’t have wine then.
- Pie de Limón was translated Foot of Lemon instead if Lemon Pie. Lemons have feet. Good to know.
- The old adopted mother returns to a pot of meat (an image proves this is the way a Chinese menu translated the dish). What more can we add?
- Open seven days a week, and weekends too. (In a New Zealand restaurant) Wait. There’s a nine days week somewhere?
- Don’t stand there and be hungry. Come on in and get fed up. (Restaurant window) This is definitely a restaurant with people staring inside…
- “Vino Blanco o Tinto por Copa” ended up translated as “Cup of white wine or I Dye” instead of “Glass of White or Red Wine”. White wine it is.
- Spied upon prickly tomato sauce’ (Restaurant menu, Nice, France) If you say so.
- Fried milk, children sandwiches, roast cattle and boiled sheep. (A menu in Vienna) What more could we possibly ask for?
- “12 Unidades de Colas de Camarón Salteados c/Champiñon” is “12 units of Tails of Attacked Camarón c/Champiñon” instead of “12 Sautéed Shrimp w/Mushrooms” There’s a war somewhere.
- We do not re-use the food. (At a Korean restaurant in Auckland, New Zealand) This makes you wonder about all of the other restaurants…
